Triple H emphasized the need for flexibility in WWE’s creative planning, particularly for major events like WrestleMania, due to the unpredictable nature of live shows.
Speaking to The Press Box, he explained how injuries, illnesses, and last-minute changes often force rewrites, as illustrated by the January 3rd episode of SmackDown.
Triple H described using whiteboards for long-term planning, likening it to solving a jigsaw puzzle. He shared how unexpected medical updates — such as injuries worsening or talent falling ill — can disrupt even finalized scripts.
For example, Friday’s SmackDown underwent significant changes after a talent’s MRI revealed worse-than-expected results, followed by another performer being sent home with the flu just before the show.
“This Friday night, we had the show written up, and it was really good, and it moved a lot of stories forward. Then we get word talent are injured, and it’s, ‘Went in for an MRI, and it’s worse than we thought, and he’s out.’
Okay, alright. So we gotta rewrite that whole storyline. Then we’re literally finishing the production meeting, and we just said, ‘All right guys, have a great day,’ and my phone buzzes. I look down, and it’s medical, and I get the, ‘So-and-so has flu really bad. We’re telling them don’t come to the building and sending them home. Cannot work.’”
While WrestleMania 41 has a framework in place, Triple H expects adjustments and has backup plans ready. He acknowledged how sudden changes can be tough on talent, who might feel frustrated or overlooked when plans shift. Despite these challenges, he stressed the importance of adaptability in ensuring WWE’s live events remain dynamic and engaging.
