In 2017, Shinsuke Nakamura’s WWE main roster push began. He defeated John Cena and went on to face Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship, but lost.
In 2018, Nakamura won the Men’s Royal Rumble match, but failed to defeat AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 34, and in their rematches as well.
Nakamura received a main event singles push again this year, with him main eventing his first ever WWE main roster premium live event recently, where he unsuccessfully challenged Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship.
According to the Wrestling Observer, WWE’s Chief Content Officer Triple H is pushing Nakamura because he wants to sign NJPW main eventer Kazuchika Okada, and wants to show Okada that Japanese wrestlers are being treated right in the company:
“The pitch is that he’s now 36 & he’s close with Nakamura and Nakamura has worked years in WWE & it’s far easier on his body.
The idea is that WWE is the one thing Okada has never done & he’s done everything he can do in New Japan.
One person who buzzed us about the renewed interest in Okada said that one of the reasons Nakamura is getting a renewed push is to show Okada that this regime is not going to treat Japanese like the stereotypical children-like because Vince does that with people who don’t speak fluent English, but this is a new regime.”
