CM Punk has shed light on a previously untold chapter in his complicated relationship with WWE, revealing a secret meeting with Vince McMahon and Triple H that ultimately led nowhere – and dismissing persistent rumors about why he stayed away for so many years.
Speaking on the “My Mom’s Basement” podcast with Robbie Fox, Punk disclosed that around 2018 or 2019, WWE reached out to him through intermediaries to discuss a return. Initially uninterested, Punk said the conversation escalated when Vince McMahon personally called him to bypass the middlemen and arrange a clandestine meeting.
“I had a hilarious clandestine meeting in the Borgata in Atlantic City with Vince and Triple H,” Punk recalled. “We had a handshake agreement – and then [Vince] ghosted me.”
Punk’s story directly refutes years of speculation that WWE had rejected his attempts to come back. He explained that contrary to popular belief, the negotiations fell apart not because WWE didn’t want him, but because Vince stopped communicating after their initial agreement.
“I think the Twitter and internet perception is that I tried to go back to WWE and they didn’t want me, so I went and did the FOX show,” Punk said. “That’s not exactly what happened at all.”
He noted that this Borgata meeting marked one of the first times he and Triple H began mending fences after their well-known past issues.
“At that point in my mind, I was open to it,” Punk said. “Years had gone by. I was over it. I recognized that it’s a business. You don’t want me to take it personally? Just pay me.”
Ultimately, the deal fell through, and Punk remained away from WWE until his eventual return in 2023.
