Below are some top news stories of the day, involving Wheeler Yuta (AEW) and Sting.
• AEW has faced criticism from fans who argue that despite multiple programs like Dynamite, Rampage, Collision, and ROH television, not all contracted wrestlers receive the spotlight they deserve.
One of the primary concerns raised by fans is the underutilization of certain talents within the promotion. While creative decisions play a role in this, injuries also contribute significantly to wrestlers being sidelined. AEW has seen notable names like MJF, Adam Cole, Jamie Hayter, and more forced to take time off due to various injuries, affecting their presence in AEW programming.
Among those on the injured list is Wheeler Yuta, the reigning ROH Pure Champion. Yuta’s absence from the ring has been notable since his last match in January, where he faced Eddie Kingston in a Triple Crown Championship match. Since then, he has been conspicuously absent from AEW television.
Reports from Fightful Select shed light on Yuta’s situation, revealing that he has been grappling with concussion symptoms for several months. Despite efforts to gauge his recovery progress, there remains uncertainty surrounding when he will be able to return to action. As of the latest update in March, there were hopeful signs that Yuta’s absence would not be prolonged, but no definitive timetable has been established.
• In the main event of Starrcade 1993, Ric Flair defeated Vader in a “Career vs. Title” match to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.
Ric’s daughter and future WWE wrestler Charlotte Flair (who was 7 years old at the time) was a part of the backstage celebration segment that took place after the match.
Charlotte wrote the following about that segment in the “Second Nature: The Legacy of Ric Flair and the Rise of Charlotte” book:
“After the match, we were all in the locker room as part of a segment with Mean Gene (Okerlund). During our interview, Ricky Steamboat and Sting came in to congratulate my dad.
No one knew this at the time, but I had a huge crush on Sting. He was my boyfriend – well, at least I thought so.”
