The originally planned main event of SummerSlam 2022 was Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. However, WWE had to change their plans due to Orton’s major injury.
On this week’s RAW, Orton said he has unfinished business with The Bloodline and is coming for them.
WWE is now advertising Orton for this Friday’s SmackDown at the Barclays Center in New York.
Orton might kick off his feud with The Tribal Chief this Friday, by going after Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso, as Roman currently isn’t scheduled to appear this Friday.
Since we might be getting a big championship match between Reigns and Orton in the near future, let’s take a look back at their history.
While the two have on-screen storyline issues now, they had off-screen real-life issues 10 years ago.
Both men had a heated exchange after a Live Event match in 2013. Here’s what the Wrestling Observer reported back then:
“There was heat on The Shield in recent weeks. It was said that Rollins and Reigns were the two the office was upset with.
Another WWE source said the issue with Reigns was that there was a house show tag match which Reigns and Randy Orton were in, and they botched up a spot and got into a shouting match about it backstage.
A guy in Reigns’ spot arguing with a guy in Randy Orton’s spot is a great way to get massive heat on you.
Regardless of what happened, we were told that there was a power struggle of sorts in that Vince McMahon wanted people punished and Triple H didn’t want [The Shield] punished, so he was fighting to keep them strong on TV.”
A year later in 2014, Randy was accused of trying to ruin Roman’s singles push by having “crowd killing” style matches with him at Live Events, which were received negatively by both the fans in attendance and WWE Officials backstage.
Orton and Reigns have faced each other in only one singles PPV/PLE match so far. At SummerSlam 2014, Reigns defeated Orton.
