Dave Meltzer disclosed an interesting tidbit during a discussion about Rocky IV’s fictional Christmas Day boxing match.
Rocky IV, a sports drama film released in 1985, was a huge hit. Made on a budget of $28 million, the movie drew $300 million at the Box Office!
According to Meltzer, Kerry Von Erich was once in contention for the role of Ivan Drago opposite Sylvester Stallone’s legendary character, Rocky Balboa.
Kerry Von Erich, a prominent figure in the wrestling world, had made a name for himself with his athleticism and charisma. His noteworthy achievements include a brief but impactful NWA World Heavyweight Championship reign in 1984 and a WWF Intercontinental Championship reign in 1990.
Known as “The Texas Tornado”, Von Erich’s wrestling prowess earned him a dedicated fan base and cemented his place in the annals of professional wrestling history.
Despite his wrestling success, Kerry faced personal challenges that eventually overshadowed his achievements.
After joining the WWF in 1990, Von Erich’s time with the promotion was cut short, and tragically, on February 18th, 1993, he took his own life.
The wrestling community mourned the loss of a talented performer whose struggles offstage mirrored the intense drama often witnessed inside the ring.
In 2009, Kerry Von Erich received posthumous recognition when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. This acknowledgment celebrated his contributions to the world of professional wrestling, highlighting his impact on the industry and the fans who cherished his performances.
The tragedy of the Von Erick family was featured in Season 1, Episode 4 of the Dark Side of the Ring in 2019.
