During a recent appearance on ‘The Wrestling Time Machine’, 2017 WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long claimed that he was once set up by John Laurinaitis to get fired from WWE as a referee, but he was then rehired as a manager.

Here’s what Teddy said:

“I just got a call one day from Jim Ross. He said ‘Well, you know you’re gonna have to go all the way back to the bottom’.

What I did, I went and made the count, 1-2- you know. One of the guys didn’t kick out, so I went on down to 3, so they tried to say that I screwed the finish up, so Johnny fired me.

I had the opportunity to see Test before he died, and he said ‘Hey man, they set you up. I didn’t know that they were trying to get me to help them to fire you’.

(Later) They wanted to bring me back to come in as a Manager.”

After working as a referee for Jim Crockett Promotions and as a manager for Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling, Teddy Long joined the World Wrestling Federation during the famous Attitude Era and was used as a referee right away, before eventually being used as a manager – as stated above – as well.

He’s also known for his famous ‘SmackDown!’ General Manager role, where he used to book a lot of tag team matches and put heels in matches against The Undertaker!
