During a recent episode of his weekly ‘The Kurt Angle Show’ podcast, our 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist did a watch-along of the October 31st 2002 Halloween episode of ‘WWE SmackDown!’ and the opening match was a very good encounter between Edge and Chris Benoit.

Here’s what Kurt Angle had to say about the match:

“Well, Edge was such an incredible athlete. He was just a super athlete, and Chris Benoit was so intense. And with his technical ability and wrestling, there’s nobody better.

So these two athletes, they’re the cream of the crop, they’re the top of the company. They are, man. They always put on their A-game. They’re very consistent. And they’re two of the best wrestlers in the WWE at this particular time.

Like I said, (Benoit was) the most consistent and best wrestler I’ve ever been in the ring with. He really is the guy who has it all. He would have been a bigger star if he had, he’s got the charisma, he didn’t have a lot of mic skills. Yeah, but what made up for it is his in-ring work.

He was the most sought after wrestler. Everybody wanted to work with him because he had chemistry with everybody.”

Chris Benoit left Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling after the WCW Souled Out 2000 pay-per-view and joined the World Wrestling Federation in February 2000.

Benoit stayed with the company (later WWE) until he caused the by far most horrible tragedy in professional wrestling history in June 2007, when he ended up killing his wife Nancy Benoit (aka NWA/ECW/WCW valet Woman) and their 7-year old son Daniel Benoit, before taking his own life.
