Matt Riddle became a controversial figure in WWE due to his problematic actions outside the ring and multiple drug test failures, leading to him getting fired.
It’s a well known fact that Riddle went into business for himself during several interviews, where he called out Brock Lesnar, Goldberg and Roman Reigns, and even went on to insult them, in hopes of getting to work a program with them.
Lesnar even confronted Riddle about this backstage at Royal Rumble 2020, where he told Riddle that they will never work together. Although Riddle did get to face Lesnar for a few seconds in a WWE ring, but that was it.
During the 2022 Men’s Royal Rumble match, Riddle jumped on Lesnar, but Lesnar immediately eliminated him by throwing him out of the ring in a matter of seconds.
At Elimination Chamber 2022, Lesnar and Riddle were both in the WWE Championship chamber match. Before entering his pod, Lesnar had a face-off with every participant that was in the pod, except Riddle. He completely ignored Riddle while moving past him. When it was time for Riddle and Lesnar to go at it during the match, Lesnar immediately hit Riddle with an F5 and pinned him.
Everybody knows about Riddle’s infamous history with Goldberg, but Riddle managed to get real-life heat with Roman Reigns as well, when he said in an interview that he could beat up the face of WWE in an MMA cage because he’s a former UFC fighter and Reigns isn’t.
For a while, WWE kept Reigns and Riddle apart because of real-life tension between them.
Former WWE personality Matt Camp discussed on ‘The Wrestling Matt’ how Roman appeared on WWE’s The Bump YouTube show in August 2021 as part of his partnership with Shady Rays, a sunglasses company. Camp mentioned that WWE ensured Riddle was not present on set until after Reigns’ interview to prevent any potential conflicts. Camp believed this was the right call to make.
Randy Orton told Riddle that his comments were unprofessional and advised him to issue an apology to Reigns.
Here’s what Camp said:
“Then [Roman Reigns] came on again a year later, in August of 2021, because he had a partnership with Shady Rays, a sunglasses company. He did the interview from a house with an outdoor shower somewhere, and he was in full Roman mode. It had been a year. The funny part is that Riddle was the in-studio guest for that show, and we 100% did not put Riddle on the set until Roman was off the video screen. We didn’t want to mess with that.
Then Riddle went and said something dumb about Roman in another interview right after that. I think that’s where he told the story about writing a letter to Roman apologizing, with Randy (Orton) telling him to do it and all that. We made a point to keep Riddle off the set until the Roman interview was done, which was definitely the right call.”
Both men buried the hatchet in 2022 and Reigns’ first Undisputed WWE Universal Championship defense after WrestleMania 38 was against Riddle on an episode of SmackDown, where The Tribal Chief won.
