• 1st SmackDown Star Advances To Semi-Finals Of World Title Tournament

In the opening match of tonight’s SmackDown, AJ Styles defeated Edge and Rey Mysterio in a Triple Threat Match in the 1st round of the World Heavyweight Championship tournament.

Styles pinned Edge to advance to the Semi-Finals. We reported earlier that Triple H didn’t want Edge to win the World Heavyweight Title (the title that he never lost) due to his part-time status.

AJ will now face the winner of the Austin Theory vs. Bobby Lashley vs. Sheamus later in the night.

The eventual winner from the SmackDown side will face Seth Rollins in the Finals of the tournament at Night Of Champions on May 27th.

• ON THIS DAY IN WWF HISTORY (May 12, 1997) – WWF Monday Night RAW

On this day in 1997, the World Wrestling Federation aired another episode of their weekly TV show ‘WWF Monday Night RAW’.

It was broadcasted from the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark, Delaware and featured matches, interviews & storyline segments on the road to the ‘WWF King of the Ring 1997’ PPV.

This episode featured the WWF debut of ECW Wrestler Rob Van Dam, as well Shawn Michaels superkicking Bret Hart, who was sitting in a wheel chair, but it wasn’t shown on TV that night, because the show went too long and was over before the segment could finish, which caused quite a bit of controversy, including Shawn blaming Bret for going too long on purpose.

Here’s the card:

– Ahmed Johnson vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley

– Scott Putski vs. Leif Cassidy

– The Legion of Doom vs. PG-13

– The Undertaker vs. Savio Vega

– Rob Van Dam (RVD’s WWF debut) vs. Jeff Hardy

– Davey Boy Smith & Owen Hart vs. The Headbangers

– New Blackjacks vs. Doug Furnas & Phil Lafon
