After concluding his amateur wrestling career, Kurt Angle stepped into the professional wrestling world, making his official WWF debut in 1999.
According to Ric Flair, Kurt once contemplated joining WCW, but he intervened and connected Angle with Vince McMahon.
Here’s what The Nature Boy said on Busted Open Radio:
“We were at a gym in Nashville, TN. I had met Kurt several times. He walked over and said, ‘I think I’m getting into wrestling. What do you think? What do you think of me going to WCW?’ I said, ‘If I were you right now… Give me a minute.’
I went into the locker room, got my phone, called Vince, put him on the line. Two weeks later, Kurt was working out with Dory Funk Jr.
WCW might not have destroyed Kurt Angle—no one could—but they wouldn’t have recognized his immense talent.
Kurt, when healthy, was undeniably one of the greats. He’s a special kind of athlete and a special guy.”
Angle himself has corroborated this account, acknowledging that Flair’s intervention spared him from WCW.
Subsequently, Kurt Angle carved out one of the most illustrious careers in WWE history, securing multiple championships and earning a well-deserved place in the WWE Hall of Fame in 2017.
Angle’s final professional wrestling match took place at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, where he lost to Baron Corbin.
