• Kurt Angle expressed dissatisfaction with his time as the General Manager of Monday Night RAW during his 2017 return to WWE.

He attributed the lack of enjoyment to the WWE writing team, who were not in tune with his character. Angle compared the experience to his earlier years when head writer Brian Gewirtz provided material that allowed his personality to shine.

Angle missed the comedic side of his character and felt frustrated by the serious role he was given; Angle also recalled a humiliating moment involving Triple H, where Vince McMahon directed him to take a punch with a hilarious face, a segment that later became a popular meme.

Here’s what the Hall of Famer said:

“I didn’t have as much fun playing the GM as I did when I was involved in the company the prior years. I think it had to do with the writers. They weren’t really in tune with my character.

Unfortunately, they weren’t able to write some great material like Brian Gewirtz wrote for me back in 2004, 2005, and 2006. I had to play a more serious GM, and I didn’t really enjoy it.

There were a couple of times I said some funny stuff, and people were like, ‘That’s the old Kurt Angle.’ I wanted that so badly, but they just weren’t writing it for me.

When Triple H punched me (before WrestleMania 34) — you know who told me to [make that funny face]? Vince McMahon made an a$$ out of me too.”
