AEW wrestler Kyle Fletcher believes The Undertaker’s character wouldn’t resonate as strongly with today’s wrestling audience.
The Undertaker dominated the WWF / WWE for 30 years with his supernatural persona, terrifying fans and achieving legendary status. Even after his official retirement in 2020, he continued to make an impact, including a prominent role at WrestleMania 40 earlier this year.
However, Fletcher feels the character might not fit as seamlessly into the modern wrestling landscape.
Speaking on SENQ Breakfast, Fletcher reflected on past wrestling personas like Hulk Hogan and The Undertaker, noting how the industry has evolved. He explained that modern wrestling leans more toward realism, which influenced his decision to wrestle under his real name.
According to Fletcher, characters that viewers can relate to — like the frustration of wanting to “punch their boss in the face” — connect better today than supernatural personas.
“In today’s day and age in pro wrestling, it’s a lot more based in reality,” Fletcher stated. “The characters you see on TV, part of the thing that makes them so special is a lot of people can relate to those characters. They can relate to wanting to punch their boss in the face or those kinds of things, as opposed to a supernatural character like The Undertaker.”
Fletcher acknowledged the legendary status of The Undertaker, saying, “It’s very much contextual-based. Back in the day, The Undertaker worked and became one of the biggest characters of all time. I don’t think it works quite as well in this day and age.”
Kyle Fletcher is preparing for a high-profile match against Will Ospreay at the AEW Full Gear 2024 PPV on November 23.
