On this day in 1971, WWWF World Heavyweight Champion Bruno Sammartino defended his title against “The Russian Bear” Ivan Koloff in the famous Madison Square Garden.
After Bruno held the belt for almost 8 years at that point, literally no one expected him to lose it that night, so when it did happen, it’s being said that the crowd was even more silent than the WrestleMania 30 crowd after Taker’s streak was broken.
