4-Time ROH Tag Team Champion & former AEW Coach B.J. Whitmer has resolved his recent legal matter stemming from an incident that occurred on June 4, 2023, in Boone County, Kentucky.
He faced charges of first-degree strangulation and second-degree burglary related to an altercation involving his former girlfriend, which led to his arrest and a bond set at $25,000.
Whitmer faced accusations of unlawfully entering his former girlfriend’s residence, lying in wait for her return, and attempting to silence her by strangling her, purportedly to prevent her from disclosing previous grievances with him.
Following his arrest, Whitmer was released from his contract with AEW.
All Elite Wrestling issued the following statement:
“B.J. Whitmer has been terminated following his arrest on domestic violence charges. While talent and staff are ultimately responsible for their own personal actions, this behavior is intolerable within AEW. AEW has reached out to offer support to those impacted by his behavior.”
According to BJ Bethel, Whitmer has been sentenced to 5 years of probation and 120 days of home incarceration in connection with the case.
Opting for an Alford plea, Whitmer maintains his innocence while acknowledging that there is sufficient evidence that could potentially lead to a conviction in a jury trial.
By accepting the plea deal, Whitmer has the opportunity to have the felony expunged from his criminal record in 5 years. The victim disagreed with the acceptance of the plea deal.
In an update on this situation, newly released legal papers reveal that AEW communicated with the victim of this incident and proposed a financial settlement while requiring her to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
The court document stated:
“The Commonwealth was aware that the victim had been in contact with AEW shortly after the incident however the extent of these discussions were unknown.”
