Below are some top TNA & AEW news stories of the day, involving CM Punk and Billy Gunn.

• TNA Wrestling nearly witnessed a major shake-up with the potential arrival of CM Punk, according to Moose.

Following Punk’s departure from AEW in September 2023 and his subsequent backstage appearance at TNA’s Chicago tapings, plans were reportedly in motion for him to join the promotion.

Moose took to X to reveal that during his reign as TNA World Champion, discussions were underway to bring Punk into the fold for a feud between the two. He expressed his desire to recreate the intensity of CM Punk’s iconic match against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam 2013, a bout he considers a personal favorite.

“So while I was World Champ there were plans of Punk coming to TNA and us feuding. Punk vs Lesnar from SS2013 is one of my favorites matches ever. I was looking forward to recreating something just as awesome. But obviously it never happened but who knows. Shout out to @CMPunk GOAT,” Moose wrote.

Despite the advanced planning, Punk’s return to WWE in November 2023 ultimately prevented the TNA appearance. However, Moose’s revelation offers a glimpse into what could have been, and highlights the company’s efforts to attract top-tier talent.

• WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn wanted to use his WWF theme song “A$$man” at AEW All In at Wembley Stadium and pitched the idea to Tony Khan, but Khan turned it down because he didn’t want to pay WWE for the song.

Here’s what Sean Ross Sapp reported on Fightful‘s AEW Dynamite post-show:

“One of the pitches that I had heard was that Billy Gunn, because he had this dual WWE merchandising deal, was hoping to inquire about using A$$man at Wembley, which objectively would have been enormous reaction, like it would have been an incredible reaction.

There were some pitches that he would come back at Wembley and that song would be playing and I wish they could have made that happen, but from what I understood, it was a pretty quick inquiry and it didn’t happen and also and again this was just like a speculatory thing that it was very much Tony Khan being like, ‘I ain’t paying WWE sh*t’.

Like you want to work it out with your royalties or whatever that might be by all means, but I don’t think that it got really far, but that could have been really cool.”
