In the main event of All In 2024, Bryan Danielson defeated Swerve Strickland in a Career vs. Title match to win the AEW World Championship.
During an interview with Justin Barrasso, Bryan talked about Swerve re-signing with All Elite Wrestling and took a shot at WWE releasing Swerve in 2021.
Here’s what Bryan said:
“Swerve just signed a new contract with AEW, and that is one of the benefits of having two mainstream wrestling companies in the United States. WWE didn’t see value in him, and they let him go.
You watch him and ask, ‘Who would ever let go of this guy?’ He just wasn’t given the opportunity to be his best self.
And that goes both ways… I don’t want it to sound like, ‘Oh, evil WWE, they don’t let their talent be their best selves.’ Some people will thrive there. Some people will thrive here.”
In August, Chris Jericho took the same shot at WWE, wondering how they could release Swerve. Here’s what Jericho said during an interview with Sports Illustrated:
“His persona is larger-than-life, he works extremely hard, and he’s a good person. His energy is amazing. The man can tear the house down. Swerve is our team captain right now, and I’m proud to be on that roster.
I don’t know how you could ever let that guy go. This is only his first time as champ and look what he’s doing. Wait until the second time and the third time and the fourth time. He has star written all over him.”
After losing to Bryan, Strickland lost to “Hangman” Adam Page in the main event of All Out 2024, in an Unsanctioned Lights Out Steel Cage Match.
Strickland is currently taking some time off from AEW.
