CM Punk Wanted To Return To WWE At Royal Rumble 2023 To Set Up A WrestleMania 39 Match With Kevin Owens

CM Punk Royal Rumble 2020

Today marks exactly one year since the infamous brawl between CM Punk and The Elite which took place after Punk made problems between himself and The Elite public during the AEW All Out 2022 media scrum.

The Elite is still with the company, while Punk was fired this past Saturday. He was gone from AEW for 9 months and returned on the debut episode of Collision back in June for a run which lasted only two months.

Punk’s release from AEW has once again led to speculation about the former AEW World Champion returning to WWE.

According to Fightful Select, people close to Punk claim that he was open to leaving AEW for a WWE return in December last year.

It’s unknown if WWE wanted him or if AEW would release him at that time, though.

One of the ideas that Punk pitched was him returning at the Royal Rumble earlier this year and work a match at WrestleMania 39 against a wrestler who would eliminate him from the Men’s Royal Rumble match. The name he wanted to work with was Kevin Owens.

Punk and Owens have some history from their time during ROH. Owens is also the guy who got to live Punk’s dream, which was main eventing a WrestleMania against WWE Hall of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin.
