The fall of WCW remains a hot topic in the wrestling world, with its downfall attributed to a multitude of factors. A new docuseries titled “Who Killed WCW?” has reignited interest in the subject, offering an in-depth look at the various elements that led to the company’s collapse.
Produced by The Rock’s Seven Bucks Productions, the series premiered on June 4 on VICE TV and has already stirred significant discussion, particularly due to Bret Hart’s unfiltered remarks.
In the debut episode, Bret Hart did not hold back his criticism of WCW and Eric Bischoff, whom he referred to as “Hulk Hogan’s puppet”. Summing up his time in WCW with a blunt, “Thanks for nothing, go f**k yourselves,” Hart’s comments were a focal point of the episode.
Eric Bischoff, who was also featured in the docuseries, addressed Hart’s harsh words on a special edition of the 83 Weeks podcast. Bischoff dismissed Hart’s comments as expected, noting that Hart often holds resentment and blames others for his grievances.
“Did I expect Bret Hart to be crabby and grouchy and blame the world? Sure. We hear it every time we hear Bret, he’s angry at somebody, nothing new there,” Bischoff said.
Bischoff went on to express empathy for Hart, suggesting that despite his outward demeanor, he might be deeply unhappy. He recounted a recent encounter with Hart in Australia, where he observed Hart appearing miserable.
“I saw him in Australia a couple of weeks ago. I was there and he was there and I said hello to him, acknowledged him and met his wife and she seems like a very nice person. But you just look at this guy from across the room and he looks… miserable.
I don’t know, maybe deep down inside he’s a very joyful person, but he looks miserable, it’s the same old sh*t. Bret didn’t have a f**king clue what was going on in WCW.”
The 1st episode of “Who Killed WCW?” on VICE drew 138,000 viewers with a 0.03 rating in the 18-49 demo.
