• Eric Bischoff Reveals Why He Wanted To Fake His Own Death In WCW

Eric Bischoff once dreamed up a dramatic twist for WCW’s nWo storyline, he wanted to disappear by faking his own death in a plane crash. The idea was meant to explain how the New World Order kept slipping past security during their invasion. Bischoff revealed the idea on his 83 Weeks podcast, describing how the story had a ‘logic hole’. The nWo’s ability to show up unchallenged didn’t add up. To solve this, Bischoff imagined revealing himself as the secret mastermind behind the takeover. But to make the reveal unforgettable, he wanted to vanish from the public eye in a mysterious way.

His plan? Use his own private plane and stage a disappearance while flying around the Grand Canyon. Bischoff said, “I really wanted to fake my own death.” He pictured people speculating that he had gone off course, possibly entering Mexican airspace and vanishing from radar. “I was no longer being tracked by FAA, who knows what happened,” he explained.

Before taking this radical idea to WCW management, Bischoff checked in with his wife. Then, he pitched it to Harvey Schiller, Turner Sports’ president. Schiller shut it down immediately. The reason? Bischoff was a corporate officer for a publicly traded company. Schiller worried the stunt could be seen as stock manipulation or create legal trouble. “If it’s revealed that this faked death for a wrestling storyline could be interpreted as somehow manipulating public stock, there’s exposure there,” Bischoff recalled. He understood the risks but admitted, “I just hated it. If I’d have gotten a green light from Harvey, I would have done it.”

In the end, Bischoff revealed himself as the nWo leader in a more straightforward way, without faking his death.
