Exclusive Interview With Boris Zhukov

T: “What led to you competing as a singles wrestler for most of 1989, even though you and Nikolai were still a tag team? Was he injured or were there other reasons for your singles run?
Boris: “No reason much at the time for a lot of single matches in 1989. They wanted to change things up, but also to take heat off of us. They could not believe how they could beat us every night and we still had more killer heat than anyone. It drove them nuts. But when Reagan told Gorbachav to tear down that wall and the Soviet Union fell, our gimmick and tag team was finished. The office was elated.”

T: “What are your thoughts about the Ultimate Warrior? Did you get along with him?

Boris: “Jim was a great guy. He kept to himself a lot. But very intense, worked out hard all the time, was in great shape. He had a lot of pressure put on him, but seemed to handle it well. I liked him and respected him for giving it all he had. He was very believable in the ring and I always respected him for that.”

T: “At Wrestlemania 6 at the Skydome in Toronto Canada, The Bolsheviks lost to The Hart Foundation in 19 (!!!) seconds. My question is, did you piss anybody off to get booked in a squash match like this? It certainly wasn´t booked that way to get the Hart Foundation over, was it?

Boris: “At WrestleMania 6 in Toronto, they wanted all the time they could get for Warrior and Hogan. These pay per views are timed from beginning to end. They wanted me to turn on Nikolai on the next upcoming tv taping, plus push The Hart Foundation for the tag belts with Demolition. This was a super pay day, I could have said no. But I would have been fired on the spot, I was just playing a part so I did it. Besides I thought the world of Bret and Jim, I did it for them.”

T: “After almost 3 years, the Bolsheviks broke up in 1990 and Nikolai Volkoff turned babyface. What led to the split and how do you remember feuding with your fellow teammate?

Boris: “I loved working against Nikolai, he was a great babyface. The fans really went crazy over him, I loved it.”

T: “In November of 1990 you were booked to team up with your early NWA comrade Sgt Slaughter and the Orient Express as `Mercenaries´ in your last ever WWF PPV-Match at the 1990 Survivor Series. Did you enjoy teaming with Slaughter again, who at that point had the very controversial gimmick of an Iraq-sympathizer?

Boris: “I loved getting to tag with Slaughter one more time! I would have really enjoyed working with him one more time before he turned heel, but it never came to be. But it was great being with him again on that special pay per view!”
