Goldberg and Matt Riddle have had a rocky history, marked by mutual dislike during their WWE careers. While their relationship has since improved (as shown during the SummerSlam 2021 documentary), Riddle believes Goldberg wouldn’t want to face him in a retirement match.
The WCW Legend will have a retirement match in 2025, prompting many fans to speculate about his final opponent, with some hoping for a match against Riddle due to their shared history.
Speaking on Barstool Rasslin’, Riddle was asked about potentially facing Goldberg in the retirement match. He responded, saying he doesn’t think Goldberg is interested.
He recounted a conversation they had on a flight back from Saudi Arabia after a Crown Jewel PLE. They had drinks, discussed their differences, and ultimately cleared the air, with Riddle feeling there’s no lingering animosity between them.
Riddle explained that Goldberg now better understands his perspective, and Riddle himself gained insight into why Goldberg found some of his comments disrespectful. He clarified that he never intended to offend, emphasizing that, as a professional wrestler, he focuses on “facts” and stands behind his words. For him, “this is just what it is”.
Here’s what the former United States Champion said:
“I don’t think he wants to step up to the plate. You know, we’re keeping it real.
Well, me and Bill, we’ve talked. We were actually on a flight from Saudi after one of the Crown Jewel shows, and we had some cocktails and had a discussion. You know, I don’t think there’s any bad blood.
I think he has more of an understanding of where I was coming from. Yeah, you know, I definitely have an understanding of where he’s coming from and why he finds what I say disrespectful and things like that. I completely understand, but I don’t mean it that way.
We’re professional wrestlers. I’m just about facts, and I can back it up. This is just what it is, you know?”
