In February 2019, ET Canada reported that Netflix was working on a Hulk Hogan biopic with famous Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth portraying the Hulkster. Here’s what they reported:
“Produced for Netflix, the new movie will reportedly focus on Hogan’s rise in the world of wrestling and the beginnings of Hulkamania. The real Hulkster, Terry Bollea, 65, will serve as a consultant on the film, and will also act as executive producer alongside Hemsworth, Phillips and Bradley Cooper. The movie will not touch on the later years of Hogan’s life, which include a nasty divorce, his $€x tape scandal and a years-long lawsuit against Gawker Media.”
Hemsworth even worked out harder than before, in order to gain a lot of size to fit the massive 80s look of the former 6-time WWF Champion.
In November 2020, the biopic was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In June 2022, Chris Hemsworth shared the following update on the movie during an interview:
“Oh that film’s a while away. It’s sort of in the development stage, you know? If it comes to fruition, great, Todd Phillips is brilliant. I haven’t ripped any shirts off yet, but you’ll be the first to hear about it when I do.”
A year later in June 2023, Chris didn’t really have anything new to say:
“I don’t know what’s happening with it at the moment, but there’s a good story there. I’d love to tell it. I know Todd Phillips has been deep in the world of The Joker, but we’ve had conversations, and yeah, fingers crossed.”
Finally, The Hulkster himself has shared an update about the biopic during an interview with Chris Van Vliet, and revealed that Netflix is no longer working on it. Here’s what the 2-time WWE Hall of Famer had to say:
“Yes, I do (have an update). So it was a situation where business-wise, Netflix kind of like missed the date, you know, as far as a business situation. And so I had the choice at that time to switch gears. Scott Silver wrote the script, you know, he wrote The Joker and a bunch of different movies. And of course, Todd Phillips has done The Joker, Wolf of Wall Street and you know, whatever. All the crazy stuff that he did.
But yeah, the script came back. It was amazing. I mean, because my favorite movies are like Scarface, The Godfather, True Romance, it was there, it was there. And I just thought, whoa, but all of a sudden there was a business glitch, you know, and then they tried to fix it a few days later. And I’d already decided to move on.
So, my life rights and stuff are somewhere else now. And there are a lot of things that are getting ready to happen. And hopefully, Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth will still want to play. But there’s still a huge opportunity there.”
