During a recent episode of his weekly ‘Grilling JR’ podcast, WWF Legend & current AEW commentator Jim Ross spoke about CM Punk being fired from Tony Khan’s All Elite Wrestling, as well as the rumors that WWE might take Punk back at some point in the future.
Here’s what J.R. had to say about a potential CM Punk return to WWE:
“I hope so, and I think it’ll probably happen. I just don’t have any leads or any dirt. He’s still young enough and hungry enough I think to go out and grab those big paydays. I just don’t know where or when.
Obviously, one would assume, that’s all I’m doing, one would assume that CM Punk’s next destination could be WWE. But there’s no guarantee of that, either.
I don’t know how they left it. Then when you go through a big turnover like WWE did with the Endeavor thing being finalized, you never know. I’m gonna miss him because I enjoy being around him, and we have such a small crew that comes on Saturday night.
It’s a pretty unique environment, Collision nights. A whole lot less people are there. He’s too good not to use his skills. But I don’t know. He’s a different cat, as everybody knows. That’s not a revelation, either.”
CM Punk wrestled for World Wrestling Entertainment from 2006 until he refused to show up to work anymore in early 2014, which got him fired a few months later.
Phil Brooks then tried his luck in mixed martial arts (MMA), but after 2 UFC undercard-fighters defeated him pretty easily, Dana White didn’t give him another chance to fight in his promotion.
Punk then joined All Elite Wrestling in 2021 and managed to win the AEW World Title twice (and got injured during both reigns), but got suspended over a backstage brawl that took place after the All Out 2022 PPV.
He eventually returned to television on June 17th 2023 on the debut episode of AEW Collision, before finally being fired on September 2nd after yet another violent backstage incident, this time at the All In UK pay-per-view.
