In the main event of AEW WrestleDream 2024, Jon Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson to win the AEW World Championship.
With this loss, Bryan’s full-time career is over. After Bryan lost, Jim Ross stayed silent on commentary.
Good Ol’ JR explained his decision on his podcast:
“Sometimes it’s best for one to just lay out. At the end of the match, I was silent because I didn’t know what I needed to say to continue to sell the moment and the fact that Bryan Danielson, by his own word — he said the day he loses the title is the day he’s done — he obviously lost the title, so I take him above any wrestler I’ve ever met at his word.
I didn’t know what to say. ‘Why didn’t you say something?’ Not my people, but just some fans. There was nothing I could add that would help it. The pictures and the natural sounds, in my opinion, told the story very well.
That’s why I laid out at the very end. I know Excalibur got very emotional, he cried. I didn’t get that far into it but I appreciate his passion.
Anyhow, that was a great match. It was a really good match, they told a great story. It was physical, it was intense. If Moxley could bring that much passion out of Bryan, then good for him, it’s not that Bryan is not passionate, but you kind of had to go to a different level and different place with this scenario.”
According to the Wrestling Observer, Danielson will get an MRI to assess the damage in his neck. A recent scan showed significant damage extending throughout his neck.
“What happens next depends on if the level of damage is the same as it was or if it has worsened, and if not, by how much.
The hope is that he won’t need surgery and can heal up strong enough with stem cell treatment therapy. But if not, he’ll have to undergo surgery.
If or when he can return to the ring depends on how well all of this goes.”
