New Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena appeared on The Pat McAfee Show at WWE World today and explained the real reason behind why he turned heel.
Cena revealed that he wants to teach the fans what a ‘functional relationship’ looks like.
Here’s what the 17-time World Champion said:
“I’m entitled to feel how I wanna feel. There’s three sides to every story. There’s mine, there’s yours, and there’s the truth somewhere in the middle. Unlike all of these people, sometimes you get lost in the sauce.
Everybody gets together in a group like this. You guys all get loud, you all get emotional. I’m a student of the game, and I said it Friday night on SmackDown – winners write history and I don’t get lost in the sauce. I focus on writing history and that’s why I’m where I’m at, you know?
For a lot of years, when you get caught up into this, being a kid from a small town, coming from nothing, coming from farmland and the imagination land to get here… I’m not supposed to be here. So you do get lost in all the enthusiasm and energy. And then you kind of realize, like, oh, man, this is coming to an end. What are the things, selfishly, that I want to do?
OK, I got a legitimate chance to write history, so I don’t care what anyone else thinks about my choices at the current time. I’m gonna do finally what I wanna do. Your perspective is irrelevant, it’s my choice and it’s my decision. And I’m just gonna do what I wanna do. And I know that’s not gonna mesh well with everybody.
But say what you want about my actions currently, say what you want about my behavior in the past, you can’t knock my hustle. You can’t knock my loyalty to this company. You can’t knock the respect that I have for the people. You can’t knock the fact that I’m honest every single day that I’ve stepped in the ring, I’ve been honest and vulnerable with the audience.
So it’s OK for a group of people to have a negative reaction towards me and I’m supposed to say, ‘Oh no, no, you’re entitled to do what you want’. But if I’m not feeling well, if I’m having a bad day, if I’m grumpy and I don’t want to deal with that BS, I can’t do that? I can’t tell you how I feel? That’s not a functional relationship.
That’s not good and that’s what I mean. Like, this is not good is what I’m saying. If I got one more thing to do before I go out, it’s teach these people what a functional relationship is because they don’t know that. That’s all I’m trying to do.”
