On the “Mic Check with Mr. Anderson” podcast, Maven opened up about the early turbulence in his WWE career, explaining that when he first arrived, many wrestlers resented him for getting a major platform without climbing the traditional wrestling ladder.

“A lot of guys were upset with how I got there,” Maven said, adding, “They were right. I didn’t invent the damn show (Tough Enough), but I also didn’t go through what they went through.”

Maven acknowledged that he skipped the long bus rides, carpool caravans, and low-paying indy matches that veterans endured for years. That resentment translated into real heat, and Maven’s early months in WWF/E were difficult. But one man changed everything: The Undertaker.

“The spot with Taker did more for me than anything,” Maven said, referring to their famous Royal Rumble 2002 moment and subsequent storyline. According to Maven, The Undertaker took the initiative to work with him and put him over, and that gesture immediately altered his reputation in the locker room.

Maven praised The Undertaker as a rare veteran willing to help someone without fear of losing status. “He knew he was at a place where giving me the rub wouldn’t hurt him at all,” Maven said.

However, Taker wasn’t the only test Maven had to pass. He and Mr. Kennedy spent significant time discussing Bob Holly and how his stiff, intense in-ring style was considered a rite of passage.

Maven remembered one moment vividly when Holly told him his clotheslines were too weak to sell. “He told me he couldn’t sell my clotheslines. They looked like nothing,” Maven recalled. The next night, Maven threw them with everything he had, earning Holly’s approval – and a painful slap on the back that left a bruise.

Mr. Kennedy chimed in with his own Holly story, remembering how he once told Bob to “give me ten” chops, knowing it would prove his toughness. Holly delivered ten brutal shots without hesitation.

Maven said surviving Bob Holly and receiving The Undertaker’s endorsement are the two things that finally ended his backstage heat. “After that, people started looking at me differently.”
