Mercedes Moné’s time in WWE was marked by highs that were repeatedly undercut by frustrating setbacks, preventing her from ever maintaining long-term momentum at the top of the Women’s division.

On a recent Instagram Live session, Moné was asked by a fan who her greatest rival had been. She first named her best friend Bayley, someone she had incredible matches with. But she also took a moment to laugh and deliver a sly jab at her former employer.

“WWE in general and its booking.”

Between 2016 and 2020, Moné captured the RAW Women’s Championship multiple times, but most reigns were short-lived, ending within days or weeks. Only her SmackDown Women’s Championship run from late 2020 into early 2021 gave her a meaningful singles title reign.

After 2017, Moné was largely absent from the main event scene. Following her loss of the RAW Women’s Championship to Alexa Bliss just eight days after winning it at SummerSlam, she went nearly three years without holding a singles title, despite remaining one of WWE’s top stars.

Things didn’t improve when she and Bayley became the inaugural WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions at Elimination Chamber 2019. What should have been a historic moment quickly lost momentum as the titles were dropped less than two months later at WrestleMania 35.

The constant inconsistency eventually took a toll. Moné later revealed she fell into depression during her WWE run and reached a point where she wanted to leave the company, feeling mentally and emotionally drained by the situation. Her breaking point came with the booking of her Women’s Tag Team Championship reign alongside Naomi, prompting both women to walk out of WWE in 2022.

Following her departure, Moné considered retiring from wrestling, but ultimately signed with AEW. The CEO has since flourished, becoming a top star and holding titles across multiple promotions.
