WWE Hall Of Famer Terry Funk unfortunately passed away on August 23rd 2023 at the age of 79, after a battle with Parkinson’s Disease and Dementia over the past couple of years.
The Wrestling Observer reported that his funeral was held in Amarillo, Texas, on Friday, September 1. Many pro wrestlers attended his funeral to celebrate his life.
There were also some heartbreaking details in the report about Funk’s condition in the months before his demise.
It was noted that Funk experienced “tremendous pain” throughout the last few months of his life. After being diagnosed with Dementia in 2021, he lived in an assisted living home before transitioning to hospice care in recent months.
Funk celebrated his 79th birthday on June 30th and many people knew by that point that he only had a few months left to live. His family had requested that the news be kept secret in spite of the suffering he went through in his final months.
Funk wrestled for WWF, WCW, ECW, NWA, AJPW, NJPW, MLW, Jim Crockett Promotions, TNA and several other Indy promotions.
He wrestled at two WrestleManias, one in 1986 (WrestleMania 2) and again in 1998 (WrestleMania XIV). He was also a former NWA World Champion, ECW World Heavyweight Champion, ECW TV Champion, WCW United States Champion, WCW Hardcore Champion and WWF Tag Team Champion.
His last match took place on September 23th 2017, where he teamed up with the Rock N’ Roll Express to compete against the team of Brian Christopher, Doug Gilbert and Jerry Lawler.
