Hulk Hogan wins WWF World Championship - January 23, 1984

On this day in Pro Wrestling history in 1984, Hulk Hogan won his 1st ever WWF World Heavyweight Championship and the Hulkamania era kicked off!

Hulk Hogan defeated The Iron Sheik to win the Title and Professional Wrestling changed forever.

According to storyline, Hulk Hogan was a “last minute replacement” for Bob Backlund, who was the original opponent for The Iron Sheik. Hogan became the first man to escape Sheik’s finishing move, the Camel Clutch.

Vince McMahon didn’t want to do a “babyface vs. babyface” match, so Backlund was booked to drop the Title to Iron Sheik, so Hogan could get super over with the crowd when he beats the hated Iranian wrestler to win the Title, which worked.
