• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (April 24, 1983) – AWA Super Sunday 1983

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on April 24, 1983, Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association promoted ‘AWA Super Sunday 1983’ at the St. Paul Civic Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The Hulkster ended up not winning the AWA World Heavyweight Championship as expected by most people, as he was the victim of a reverse decision DQ finish here.

What’s funny is, that had Hogan won the belt that night, history would’ve been totally different, as it was Hogan himself who jumped ship to the World Wrestling Federation later that year and in the process played the single biggest role in turning not only the WWF but the entire sport of professional wrestling from a local territory thing into a national and later even international sensation.

Keep in mind that Hulkamania (biggest Fan movement in pro wrestling history) was already born in the AWA during the process of his feud against Jerry Blackwell. So the potential was already there to see, but they missed out on it.

It’s safe to say, had Verne Gagne booked a different finish that night and put the belt on Hulk, history would’ve been VERY different. Big time!

Here are the results:

Brad Rheingans defeated Rocky Stone

Buck Zumhofe defeated Steve Regal

Jerry Lawler defeated John Tolos

AWA Women’s Tag Team Title: Wendi Richter and Joyce Grable (c defeated Judy Martin & Velvet McIntyre

Wahoo McDaniel defeated Eddie Boulder (Brutus Beefcake)

Jesse Ventura, Ken Patera & Blackjack Lanza defeated The High Flyers & Rick Martel

AWA World Heavyweight Title: Nick Bockwinkel (c) defeated Hulk Hogan by reverse decision DQ

Verne Gagne & Mad Dog Vachon defeated Sheik Adnan El-Kaissey & Jerry Blackwell
