• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (January 18, 1998) – WWF Royal Rumble 1998

On this day in Pro Wrestling history on January 18, 1998, the World Wrestling Federation aired their annual ‘Royal Rumble’ event LIVE on PPV from the the San Jose Arena in San Jose, California.

This was the first Attitude Era Royal Rumble and the second of 3 Royal Rumble matches that were won by “Stone Cold” Steve Austin.

Stone Cold Steve Austin won the 30-man Royal Rumble match

• On This Day In Pro Wrestling History (January 18, 1971) – WWWF MSG House Show

On this day in Pro Wrestling history in 1971, the World Wide Wrestling Federation held a televised house show at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

This live event included one of the most shocking title changes in professional wrestling history, when Ivan Koloff surprisingly ended Bruno Sammartino’s 7 year run as the WWWF World Champion.

According to reports from people who were there in the arena that night, you could almost hear a needle drop after the pinfall victory, because nobody expected Ivan to win the title (similar to how the fans reacted when The Undertaker’s streak was broken).

The show also made a new wrestling attendance record, with 21,666 fans in the crowd.
