• On This Day In Wrestling History (January 2, 2019) – Old School WWF Announcer Passes Away

On this day in 2019, we lost Old School WWF Announcer “Mean” Gene Okerlund at the age of 76 after complications from a fall.

After making a name for himself in Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association between 1970 and 1983, Gene Okerlund joined the World Wrestling Federation in early 1984 as one of quite a few AWA names that jumped ship back then.

“Mean” Gene, who is still considered the greatest backstage interviewer in professional wrestling history, stayed with the WWF for almost 10 full years, before he joined Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling in late 1993.

Shortly before Vince McMahon bought WCW in 2001, Okerlund left the company, but returned to his old workplace, the World Wrestling Federation, at WWF WrestleMania X-Seven.

In 2006 he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame by his close, personal friend “The Immortal” Hulk Hogan.

† REST IN PEACE MEAN GENE OKERLUND!

December 19, 1942 – January 2, 2019
