According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, WWE was once planning to do Adam Cole vs. Matt Riddle for the NXT Championship at August’s NXT TakeOver: Toronto II show, but they’re going with Adam Cole vs. Johnny Gargano III.

Meltzer noted that WWE officials don’t want to rush things with Riddle and that he’s going to stay in NXT for a long time (and isn’t moving up to the WWE main roster anytime soon):

“What I was told is that Matt Riddle is gonna be in there for a long time and they don’t wanna rush him into anything and they don’t need to rush him into anything so that’s the deal, but at one point it was gonna be Cole and Riddle.

Riddle isn’t even gonna be on the TakeOver show even though he got the big win on the last one which was suppose to set up [his NXT Title match with Cole].”
