After Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 39, there was speculation that WWE might do a rematch at WrestleMania 40.
WrestleVotes reported the following last month:
“I can say this. The rematch that’s at the forefront of everybody’s minds, Cody vs. Roman, is very much on the table to main event in Philadelphia next year.”
Now, WRKD Wrestling is reporting that WWE might do Cody vs. Gunther at WrestleMania 40:
“While it’s still early, discussions have taken place for RAW’s main event for WrestleMania 40 to potentially be Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther.
Both superstars have expressed interest in working with each other in the past and are seen as the top face and heel on the RAW roster.”
As reported recently by PWInsider, Cody is internally listed as the #1 babyface on the men’s side on RAW, while Gunther is listed as the #1 heel.
Cody (entry #30) and Gunther (entry #1) were the last two men in the Men’s Royal Rumble 2023 match, where Cody eliminated Gunther to win.
If this match takes place, it might be for the World Heavyweight Championship and could main event Night 1 of WrestleMania 40.
Cody is currently involved in a feud with Brock Lesnar. On last night’s RAW, Lesnar brutally assaulted Cody twice.
In the main event segment, Triple H showed concern and said Cody knows his arm is broken and he’s afraid… Cody cut him off and got angry and said he’s not afraid.
Triple H then said Cody is afraid that he won’t be cleared to compete at Night Of Champions if he gets the Doctors to check on him.
Cody reminded HHH of The Game’s own career, and how he always showed up to fight no matter what injury he was dealing with. HHH smiled and gave his blessing to The American Nightmare for this Saturday.
