Rey Mysterio faced off against Santos Escobar on Friday’s episode of SmackDown for a shot at Austin Theory’s United States Championship.

Escobar defeated Mysterio via Doctor’s Stoppage to earn the title match, which will take place two weeks later on SmackDown (post-SummerSlam episode).

The commentary team announced that Mysterio got hurt after he found himself at the receiving end of Escobar’s Suicide Dive. The doctor checked on Mysterio and made it clear that he wouldn’t be able to continue the match.

According to the Wrestling Observer, the Suicide Dive was used to cover up the fact that Mysterio got injured a few moments before it, and was going to be unable to continue.

Mysterio was reportedly “knocked silly” before the Suicide Dive. It was actually a Plancha from Escobar earlier in the match that hurt the WWE Hall Of Famer.

According to the Observer, it could’ve been the Suicide Dive that caused the match to be stopped, but their source stated something about the Plancha causing this. Mysterio was said to be “dizzy.”

It was also noted that it was a precautionary measure from WWE’s side to stop the match.
