WWE made the following announcement:

WWE is proud to announce the SMACKVILLE special event, featuring a Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship and streaming live from Nashville, Tenn. exclusively on the award-winning WWE Network on Saturday, July 27.

Don’t miss SMACKVILLE, streaming live from Music City, U.S.A., on Saturday, July 27, at 9 ET/6 PT, exclusively on WWE Network.”

According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, WWE is doing this special event to see if they can run things smoothly on a short notice:

“I’ve been told WWE is doing this for a variety of reasons, including to seeing how smooth things run on somewhat short notice, which doesn’t seem to be much of an issue for them. Another person involved suggested it was to gauge how well they could counter program on short notice.”

Brad Shepard back up Sean Ross Sapp’s report by posting the following:

“I’m being told Sean Ross Sapp’s report is correct. ‘We are taking the fight to them before they take it to us’, were allegedly Vince McMahon’s exact words on Friday. Some of these network specials will include title changes and unannounced appearances going forward.”
