• Reason Behind Charlotte Flair Winning The SmackDown Women’s Championship

On Friday’s episode of SmackDown, Charlotte Flair returned to WWE programming for the first time since WrestleMania Backlash.

She pinned Ronda Rousey to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship and WWE is now promoting her as a 14-time World Champion.

In a backstage interview after the show, Charlotte said the following about her return & title win:

“I’m a little speechless right now. 2022 has just been the best year of my life. Even going back to the beginning, I was able to wrestle in Saudi Arabia for the first time.

I beat Ronda Rousey for the first time at WrestleMania, which was always a bucket list. Then I got married, traveled the world with my husband, and then ending the year where I belong, where I’m home… it’s picture-perfect, a fairytale.

This was the first time I’ve been away since 2015, so to come back, before my music hit, I was like, ‘Do I know how to be that serious?’ Like for 8 months, I never take off the crown, but I just let it chill [when I was away]. I’m just honored to be back and pay back Ronda.

I don’t know if she thought I was going to let the last match, the ‘I Quit’ Match, go. When I went home, I thought to myself, ‘I’m a lot of things to a lot of different people, but the one thing I’m not is I’m not a quitter.’

I just waited until the right opportunity, the right time, and I’m 14-time. It’s crazy.”

According to Xero News, Triple H decided to book Charlotte to win the SmackDown Women’s Title because most of the top matches for WrestleMania 39 got leaked (where Flair was scheduled to face Bianca Belair for the RAW Women’s Championship), so he wanted to shake things up heading into WrestleMania season:

“Triple H was the one who decided on Charlotte dethroning Rousey on SmackDown as he wanted to shake up the WrestleMania plans as everything had been getting leaked online and WWE had taken notice.”
