In the main event of WrestleMania 35 in 2019, Becky Lynch defeated RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey and SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair in a Winner Takes All triple threat match to win both the titles.
This was the first ever women’s WrestleMania main event in WWE history. Becky pinned Ronda to win the match, but the finish was botched because Ronda’s shoulders were up.
During an interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Rousey said this botched finish wasn’t planned (in order to build to a singles match with Becky Lynch down the line) and blamed it on WWE Officials for not giving them enough time to rehearse, unlike her debut match at WrestleMania 34.
Here’s what the UFC Hall of Famer said:
“I didn’t think my shoulders were flat on the ground, so I was trying to scoot to get my shoulders flat because it’s so f**king loud I can’t hear anything.
But that’s the difference between a match that got thrown together the night before and the debut match, which is a match that had been put together over weeks with tons of support and practice and opinions and everything like that.
Why were we putting a whole year into promoting and building this match, and then it’s just thrown together at the last second? We were still figuring it out when we were at the venue, and that’s what a lack of practice and rehearsal does.”
Rousey noted that she wanted to use the botched finish to result in a singles match against Lynch:
“I wanted to use that. I wanted to use that as, okay, this is how we lead into the next one. We bring it up on the Tron and say ‘You never got me, this is bullsh*t. The referees are all in your pocket…’ And put that into the next, you know, the singles between me and Becky that everybody wanted that got taken away.
No, no, no (the botch wasn’t intentional). I didn’t think my shoulders were flush. I was trying to flatten out. But I think that we could have used it and kept it going, but they never let us.”
When asked why the match against Becky didn’t happen, Rousey bluntly responded, “I don’t know, Vince (McMahon) is an 80-year-old a$$hole.” She added, “Vince McMahon, John Laurinaitis, Bruce Prichard. They can all suck a d**k.”
However, she expressed affection for Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, saying, “They’re fantastic, I love them.”
