D-Von Dudley has pushed back strongly against claims that he “protects” the McMahon family, saying the criticism ignores both his real-life experiences and the professional boundaries he maintained throughout his career in WWE.

Addressing the perception on the Duke Loves Rasslin podcast, D-Von Dudley said he understands why some fans expect controversy or negativity, but made it clear that his personal history with the McMahons does not support that narrative. “Everybody loves controversy. Everybody would love to hear the dirt if there is dirt. There is no dirt for me to tell on the McMahons.”

The WWE Hall of Famer explained that his respect for the family comes from how they treated him professionally over the years, not from blind loyalty. While acknowledging that things were not always perfect, he emphasized that the McMahons showed up for him when it mattered. “Wasn’t always perfect. There were certainly moments where you could complain. But for the most part, it sounds like the family as a whole, they’ve shown up for you more often than not.”

He also rejected the idea that defending the McMahons means ignoring controversy surrounding them, particularly involving Vince McMahon. D-Von made it clear that such matters were never his place to comment on.

“Regardless of the history and what’s been in the media, whether the recent events that’s happened with Vince, number one, that’s not my business. Number two, I’ve never hung out with Vince outside of performing for him.”

As part of that explanation, D-Von shared a personal story involving Shane McMahon, revealing that he recently received an unexpected birthday call from Shane despite not having spoken to him on the phone in years.

“Out of the blue, I got a phone call from him and he was like, ‘D-Von, it’s Shane.’ I looked at my phone and I said, ‘Shane who?’ He goes, ‘Shane McMahon.’ I was shocked when I saw his name come up.”

D-Von said the call meant a great deal to him and reflected the genuine relationships he formed behind the scenes. “For him to have called me on my birthday after how many years, it was really cool,” he said, describing Shane O’Mac as competitive, down to earth, and someone he truly enjoyed being around during his WWF/E run.

He also explained why he believes maintaining professional distance from management was essential, even when relationships felt friendly. “Just because the boss smiles and laughs with you every once in a while doesn’t mean he’s your best friend. Remember, he’s your boss and you have to keep it that way. That’s business.”

That same mindset, D-Von said, is why he avoids publicly criticizing WWE, especially now that his in-ring career is behind him. He framed it as a matter of perspective rather than fear or loyalty.

“Why would I say anything bad about a company that’s bought this house, that put four kids through college? Please tell me. Why would I shoot myself in the foot?”

D-Von Dudley added that restraint and professionalism are key reasons he believes he has enjoyed such longevity in wrestling and media. “I think twice before I speak. That’s exactly why I’ve lasted for as long as I have.”
