• Roman Reigns Names His Wrestling Mount Rushmore and the Greatest of All Time
Roman Reigns has a very clear metric when it comes to judging the greatest wrestlers in history: the money they drew for the company.
During his appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast, host Shannon Sharpe asked Reigns who he places on his personal Mount Rushmore of professional wrestling. Reigns explained that while many fans split the debate between ring work and star power, he only looks at one factor.
“Everybody always divides it up like money drawers and in-ring,” Reigns said. “To me, only one metric matters: the money. And it’s show business. The first day I went around the ring, my dad told me, ‘Don’t ever be confused. This ring is only about money. It’s a business. Don’t treat it any other way.'”
With that business mindset, Reigns selected four icons who transformed WWF/WWE’s financial landscape:
“So, I would probably have to say Hulk (Hogan), Steve (Austin), Dwayne (‘The Rock’ Johnson), and John (Cena). Those are my… I mean, you could definitely throw some other guys in there for sure, but we only got so many slots. And those guys, I mean when it came to the money and shifting the business and completely changing the view of it, the optics of it, they all had their own way of doing that.”
Sharpe then pushed him to pick just one person from that group as his single “G.O.A.T” (Greatest of All Time). Reigns admitted it was a very tough call, praising “Stone Cold” Steve Austin for his unmatched merchandise sales and The Rock for reaching superstardom faster than anyone else.
In the end, Reigns gave the edge to Hulk Hogan for building the very foundation of the modern wrestling world.
“Man, that’s tough. I think I’d go with Hulk,” Reigns revealed. “It’s tough, you know, it’s hard to not say Steve, but Hulk also took us from a carnival to a global product, you know what I mean? So, that’s a tough one.”
