During an episode of his 1 Of A Kind podcast, former WWE Champion Rob Van Dam revealed that there were plans for him to have a romance storyline with Stephanie McMahon.
RVD said Stephanie tried to convince him to do this storyline with her:
“I remember having a talk with Stephanie. I was really upset about it, you know what I mean, like, ‘Oh my God! This sucks.’ And I remember Stephanie, you know, trying to make me feel comfortable with it.
And she said predictably, ‘You know, look at it like we’re just actors and you’re just playing a part.’ And I was like, ‘okay, but don’t call me Rob Van Dam then because I really am Rob Van Dam’. I have been for, you know, what was it? 10-12 years.”
In 2021, during an interview on The Dropkick Podcast, RVD revealed that he couldn’t do this storyline because of his real-life partner back then:
“Something that comes to mind is when I first got there they wanted me to do a bit of a romance angle with Stephanie and myself.
And my evil ex was like the most insecure b**ch on the planet and I was like thinking, ‘oh my God, this is gonna cost me so much grief at home.’
We had a talk, me and Stephanie, and she said, ‘you know, just think of this like you’re an actor’. I was like, ‘that’s cool, except you call me Joe Blow because I’ve been Rob Van Dam for the last 10 years’.”
