The Rock’s first proper match in 11 years (not counting his 6-second impromptu match against Erick Rowan at WrestleMania 32) will take place in the main event of WrestleMania 40 – Night 1.
He will team up with WWE Champion Roman Reigns to take on the 2024 Royal Rumble winner Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins.
WWE is promoting this match as the biggest tag team match of all time, as Chief Content Officer Triple H tweeted the following:
“The biggest tag team match ever… at the biggest WrestleMania ever. The Rock & Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins is happening LIVE in Philly at WrestleMania XL.”
If Rhodes and Rollins win this match, then all members of The Bloodline will be barred from ringside during Rhodes’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match against Reigns on Night 2. However, if Reigns and Rock win, then the championship match will be Bloodline’s rules.
According to the Wrestling Observer, WWE officials are pushing Rock to have one more match in 2024, which will likely be at a Saudi Arabia PLE due to the massive payday:
“The next Saudi Arabia PPV is 5/25, which will be the day before AEW’s Double or Nothing show.
When there was an attempt by some to get Rock to move to a later date with Reigns and keep Cody Rhodes in the spot (while Nick Khan and Ari Emanuel had made the deal, there were people who felt that since the spot was promised to Rhodes last year and they’d been building it, have it be Rhodes at Mania and Reigns-Rock in Saudi with the idea of garnering more money), this would have been that date.
When asking if Rock will be working that show, we’re told there are a lot of variables in play and a variety of factors but obviously the company would like it if he would.
But while nothing is set in stone, the belief as of right now is that Mania won’t be his only match in 2024 and there is definitely a push to get him to work at least one Saudi Arabia event this year.”
The Rock has said on multiple occasions that him facing Roman is a WrestleMania main event, so it’s possible that WWE chooses a different opponent for Rock in Saudi Arabia if he agrees to wrestle one more time this year.
WWE could go ahead with a singles match against Cody or Seth, and save his long-awaited match against Reigns for WrestleMania 41.
