• Tony Khan Comments On CM Punk Getting Booed At AEW Full Gear 2021
At WrestleMania 18 in 2002, the Dream Match between Hollywood Hogan and The Rock took place.
Hogan was the heel heading into the match and The Rock was the babyface, yet the crowd cheered for the Hulkster and booed The People’s Champion.
Last night at AEW Full Gear 2021 pay-per-view, CM Punk got booed for the first time in AEW, when he faced Eddie Kingston.
During the post-Full Gear media scrum, AEW President Tony Khan compared Punk getting booed to The Rock getting booed.
Here’s what he said:
“I remember being the only person out of 70,000 cheering for The Rock in Toronto (at WrestleMania 18).
My friend looked over me like, ‘what are you doing?’ And I was like, ‘somebody has to.’ And that’s how I felt about Punk getting booed.
There were way, way, way more Punk people tonight than there were Rock people in Toronto, though. I can attest as I was there for both shows. I’ve seen what it’s like when someone makes the choice in the building.”
Khan then noted that he’d love to do an AEW show in Toronto, Ontario, Canada:
“I would love to come to Canada. There are a number of great wrestling cities all across Canada. It’s a great country for wrestling. I have so much respect for so many Canadian wrestlers from different cities. I’m very biased towards Toronto, because my father owns a Four Seasons Hotel there.”
