• Old School Wrestling Veteran Would Celebrate His Birthday

Today would have been the 55th birthday of Old School ECW/WCW/WWF Veteran Mike Awesome (Real name: Michael Lee Alfonso).

Mike Awesome was the real life cousin of Hulk Hogan’s nephew, fellow Old School WCW Veteran Horace Hogan (Michael Bollea).

After years in Japan (FMW), Mike wrestled for Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling until he joined Ted Turner’s World Championship Wrestling in April 2000, while still holding the ECW World Heavyweight Championship.

Awesome, now under WCW contract, ended up dropping the title a few days later at an ECW event in Indianapolis, by losing it to WWF Wrestler Tazz, who then lost the belt the following week to Tommy Dreamer.

When Vince McMahon bought WCW in March 2001, he was signed to a World Wrestling Federation contract and became a member of the WCW/ECW Alliance during the infamous Invasion Storyline.

• Triple H On Why WrestleMania 32 Match With The Rock Didn’t Happen

WWE officials were planning to do The Rock vs. Triple H at WrestleMania 32 (which is the reason why Triple H beat Sting at WrestleMania 31 – so he could be strong heading into his match with The Great One), but it didn’t happen despite the match being teased on multiple occasions.

During a recent interview with Alex McCarthy, The Game talked about why the match didn’t happen:

“I don’t remember the details of it, but it was one of those things that Rock and I talked about to the point where we did the backstage promo. ‘Let’s throw a scene out there and see what happens.’

It blew up, so we talked about it some more. Then scheduling just got in the way.

At that point, we were over a year away from that WrestleMania. It wasn’t until, maybe four months of the following year, we got to that, and Rock goes, ‘it’s just not gonna work. I just can’t. All of my stuff. My movies and everything has changed. I just can’t make it work anymore.’

It was what it was. I would’ve loved to have [done] it. It would’ve been a blast to step in there with him one more time and tear it up.”
