In an interview on The Roommates Show, Triple H shared insights into pivotal moments in wrestling history and his career evolution, discussing topics like the Montreal Screwjob and his unexpected entry into WWE’s creative team.

Triple H provided a behind-the-scenes look at the events leading up to the Montreal Screwjob. He recalled a tense phone call involving Vince McMahon and others about Bret Hart’s refusal to drop the WWF Championship to Shawn Michaels before leaving the company.

With Survivor Series 1997 fast approaching, Triple H, despite being a junior figure at the time, boldly suggested, “F**k that. If he won’t do business, do it for him.” This comment sparked the conversation that led to the controversial incident, showcasing Triple H’s early involvement in critical decision-making.

Here’s what The Game said:

“A famous story in our business of a moment in time called the Montreal Screwjob where they flipped the finish of a match on Bret Hart. There was a moment when we were all on the phone together, and Vince had come to us and said, ‘Bret is not gonna be re-signing, and he won’t drop the title to Shawn.’

Survivor Series was booked. We were maybe a week out, or something like that. It was close. The conversation was basically, ‘Here’s what he’s willing to do, and it’s going to kill business.’ There was just silence. Nobody knew what to say.

I was probably the least important person on the totem pole at that time, but I was like, I gotta say it. I was like, ‘F**k that. If he won’t do business, do it for him.’ That started a conversation that led to the Montreal Screwjob. That’s kind of like a bold move. I guess that paid off.”

He also recounted how he joined the WWF’s creative side during the Monday Night Wars. When the writing team left for WCW, Vince McMahon was left to write the shows alone. Sensing an opportunity, Triple H offered his help, despite doubting the decision afterward.

However, Vince called him the next day to discuss creative ideas, eventually inviting him to production meetings. Triple H volunteered his time, arriving hours early without pay, which ultimately laid the foundation for his current role as Chief Content Officer.

Triple H emphasized how taking risks and seizing opportunities can lead to significant career advancements, crediting his initiative and willingness to contribute as key factors in his rise within WWE.
