Below are some top AEW & WWE news stories of the day.
• As we have reported before, multiple sources have reported that Malakai Black (fka Aleister Black in WWE) is set to leave AEW soon.
According to PWTorch, Black faced a lot of criticism in All Elite Wrestling because he didn’t want to put talent over:
“Black was criticized by colleagues in AEW who were frustrated by the perception that he was resistant to ‘doing business’, including a reluctance to doing jobs and frequent claims of injury issues. He and Tony Khan never developed rapport.”
According to PWInsider, Black is expected to become a free agent in February or March. Black’s wife, Zelina Vega, works in WWE, so him returning to WWE would make sense.

• JBL, a pivotal figure in John Cena’s rise to WWE superstardom, has shared his thoughts on Cena’s impending retirement and his potential farewell match.
Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL reflected on Cena’s historic career and offered his vision for how it could conclude.
JBL, who lost the WWE Championship to Cena at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, highlighted the possibility of Cena breaking Ric Flair’s record to win his 17th World Championship as a fitting end. Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship is the currently rumored main event of WrestleMania 41, which JBL believes is the biggest match possible in wrestling today:
“I’d love to see Cody. Obviously. I’d love to see [Cena] against Cody for the title. I think that’s the biggest matchup in wrestling. I think it’d be fantastic. Those two guys, they’re both very smart guys, and I think that would be absolutely incredible.”
He emphasized the significance of Cena’s record-breaking potential, suggesting it would create a moment of unmatched suspense for fans:
“Nobody knows what’s going to happen. Is he going to break the famous record or not? I think that’d be incredible.”
While Cody Rhodes was JBL’s top pick for Cena’s final opponent, he also named other high-profile WWE superstars who could deliver a memorable send-off:
“But if it’s Randy, if it’s Brock, if it’s Roman, I mean, Cena is not going to have a bad match, I promise you that. All those guys I mentioned can really work.”
Cena’s farewell, set for the end of 2025, continues to generate buzz among fans and industry insiders, with speculation about his final opponents and legacy reaching a fever pitch. JBL’s endorsement of Cody Rhodes for the historic match adds another layer of intrigue to the road to Cena’s final WrestleMania.
