WWE Can’t Use One Of Their Top Tactics To Bury AEW Anymore

In just 5 years, AEW has become the #2 pro wrestling company in the world, positioning itself as WWE’s main competitor. However, there have been allegations that WWE has been requesting fast national ratings for AEW shows to undermine them. It seems Nielsen has now put a stop to this practice.

WWE’s influence over wrestling media has raised concerns about manipulating information to control narratives. A recent incident involved reports of AEW Collision’s viewership for the June 1st episode. Initially, it was reported by Alfred Konuwa that only 122,000 viewers tuned in, but the actual number was later corrected to 378,000.

Despite the correction, the lower figure had already sparked widespread discussion, leading to accusations that WWE was deliberately spreading negative stories about AEW. The Wrestling Observer also noted that WWE has been ordering these fast nationals since Nick Khan joined the company.

The Observer explained that how AEW is perceived — either as WWE’s competition or as a “second-tier” promotion — has impacted the company, especially with so much wrestling content on TV and streaming.

WWE has been skilled in promoting itself while subtly undermining AEW. However, with Nielsen no longer using fast national ratings for cable shows, WWE’s attempts to damage AEW’s image through this method will no longer work.

“The difference between the perception that it was a competitor to WWE to being ‘second-tier’ wrestling has hurt, particularly when there is so much wrestling product on the television and streaming market.

WWE also does such a good job with the media in general, in both building up its product but also in burying AEW in unique ways.

Notably, Nielsen has put a stop to fast nationals of cable shows being used for that purpose so I don’t think that game will continue to be played.”
