Rob Van Dam recently compared professional wrestling to p*rn during an appearance on The Black Announce Table podcast.
Van Dam explained that both wrestling and adult films serve as forms of escape for viewers.
“Wrestling is p*rn… People watch it to escape,” he said.
“They want to believe in everything they’re watching; they don’t want to look at it like it’s a production. They want to invest their emotions into the moment.”
Van Dam emphasized the importance of wrestlers staying focused and committed to their roles, warning that a single false moment could break the illusion for fans.
Reflecting on his own training under Detroit wrestling legend The Sheik, he recalled how Sheik would challenge him by choking him in the corner, encouraging him to keep moving and stay engaged.
“If wrestlers would look at it that way, it would change the business,” Van Dam said.
He further stressed that wrestlers need to stay in character from their entrance to the moment they leave the ring, something he learned from The Sheik and Sabu.
“That’s what’s missing right now,” Van Dam concluded.
