WWE released over 20 wrestlers from their contracts last week following the company’s merger with UFC earlier this month.
Several popular stars including Dolph Ziggler, Mustafa Ali, Shelton Benjamin and Matt Riddle were let go by the company.
One name that surprised many people was Mustafa Ali, who had been a part of WWE programming consistently on the NXT brand for the past couple of months.
He had been involved in a feud with NXT North American Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio and was set to face him for the North American Championship at the NXT No Mercy premium live event tomorrow night.
According to Fightful Select, some people in WWE are unhappy with the releases of Ali and Dana Brooke because of a breakdown in communication between the main roster and NXT.
Ali and Brooke were sent to NXT as part of WWE’s plan to have main roster talents appear on the developmental brand to give it a ratings boost.
Some WWE Officials were upset about not being informed about the decision to release Ali as it came just over a week before his match at NXT No Mercy.
It was also noted that the roster liked Brooke and respected her for her willingness to help the talent in NXT.
On Thursday’s NXT No Mercy Media Call, SVP Of Talent Development Creative Shawn Michaels admitted that the release of Ali and Brooked caused change in plans for NXT.
